NATIONAL LEAGUE & COMMUNITY BASKETBALL LEAGUE

The Community Basketball League and Basketball England National League is a big commitment and players who wish to play at this level will need to attend training on time regularly (2-3 sessions a week) and be available for games at weekends. It requires a bigger financial commitment from players, as National League iIncurs higher costs to cover the following:

  • Entry fees to league
  • Registrations for players with England Basketball
  • Officials fees & expenses for matches
  • Court running costs for training and home matches
  • Kit
  • Travel expenses to away games

Basketball England National League Games are played on a home and away basis. Community Basketball League is played at a central venue. Fixtures will be mainly in and around London and the Home Counties area, with some away games possibly being on the South Coast or East Anglia. We will let players have exact venues & times when we have confirmed the fixtures.

Players who wish to be considered for any of the teams will need to be full members of the club at which ever age level is appropriate. Selection for all teams is at the discretion of the head coach.

Full Membership at both levels will receive the following:

  • Entry to any training sessions at Brixton Recreation Centre
  • Reduced cost of camps
  • Free participation in events and tournaments
  • Free participation in National League games

About and Achievements

The under 18’s girls program focuses on developing mental and physical discipline, IQ and structure of life through the game of basketball. As Founder Jimmy Rogers once said, “you are not a girl playing basketball, you are a baller who just happens to be a girl”. Our philosophy is to develop well rounded young women who are disciplined both on and off the court. The girls in our programme learn  how to overcome obstacles, and push themselves to the next level through education and sport, personally, and professionally. As Jimmy used to say – we are all about “saying yes to all the positives and no to the negatives”. We are proud to be developing our under 18’s programmes in association with Streetgames, Lambeth and surrounding schools.

About and Achievements

The senior Men’s program offers progression for junior players to play at a senior men’s level via Basketball England’s established Division 3 National League. As most players have progressed from junior ranks, this lends a “family” ethos which echoes throughout the Club. It is one of our strategic aims to return to National League basketball, providing a platform to support the development of our young players. This will involve bringing together the experience and guidance of our older members of the Brixton Topcats family alongside the exuberance and excellence of our young players.

We strive to always stay true to the philosophy that Jimmy Rogers passed on which therefore keeps his spirit and passion for basketball and young people.

The under 18’s program focuses on the development of every player’s potential as they make the transition into adulthood, supporting this crucial stage of their maturity via the game.

About and Achievements

The girls programme was of extreme importance to Jimmy Rogers, club founder, he established the first club with a team for women in London. Our current strategy includes a commitment to honour Jimmy’s legacy by growing our offer to girls and young women. The under 16 program focuses on developing discipline and structure within the basketball game. We endeavour to ensure that the values our girls learn through basketball support their broader social and emotional development such that they become exemplars to their peers both on and off the court.

About and Achievements

The under 16 boys program focuses on skills development with a focus on basketball IQ. To have a high basketball IQ is to play the game “the right way.” Those with a high basketball IQ can “see the court” as if they were Neo in The Matrix — able to outsmart their opponents and use their intelligence to elevate the play of their teammates, combining a strong ethos of physical fitness with strong minded mentality. We understand that basketball is a mind game, ultimately it is the connection of being physically strong, mentally tough and at the same time being calm, smart and tactful. If you embrace this combination, the ‘game’ becomes easy, whether that be the game of basketball or the game of life. We are proud to teach these skills to our under 16’s.

About and Achievements

The U14’s program focuses implementing discipline required of competitive sport from an early age and on the development of the players – improving their skill set and understanding of how to play the game. Coaches teach the fundamentals, implement game like scenarios and situational drills. Our young players learn to read and practice sound defence, fundamental skills which underpin Brixton Topcats playing philosophy.

Our team slogan is ‘Play Hard, Play Smart and Play Together’. We believe doing these three things on a consistent basis and is the key to the U14s success.

We practice integrating core principles and core values of strong discipline, manners, mind, body and spirit.
