Ahead of the upcoming WBBL season, Head Coach Steve Vear is opening up Brixton Topcats doors for young UK talented players to add to his roster for the 2015/16 season.
The talent pool of young UK female basketball players is rapidly growing, especially in London and surrounding areas where the Topcats want to not only capitalise to add such players to their club but to also give them a chance of playing at the highest possible level in the UK. Coach Vear (pictured) will look to field young talent alongside older and more experienced players to help with development as well as creating a strong roster, where he explains the new direction in more detail.
“The introduction of the WBBL last season has been incredible by raising the profile and standard of the women’s game here in the UK which is a huge positive step in the right direction. Even with the playing level being raised I still honestly feel that a lot of the UK’s best junior players can compete at the WBBL level. So for me, I just simply want to give them a shot.”
Vear also explains that it’s a move to really take the entire Brixton Topcats basketball club back to its core.
“It’s also what the clubs foundation was built on where we need to continue the legacy of giving young UK talent the opportunity to play senior basketball learning alongside some core experienced players who are invested in the club. It’s what I knew Brixton Topcats to be before I arrived here two years ago!”
Owner and renowned UK basketball legend, Jimmy Rogers echoes Coach Vear who is backing him for the new direction which the men’s programmes will also continue to follow.
“We need to get back to the core of what Brixton Topcats stands for of giving young talented players access to senior basketball. We sometimes all put winning first which is understandable as it’s basketball but as a club we can’t forget the foundation of why we started it.”
Workouts and open runs will be starting next week so if you are interested in joining the WBBL team please get in touch by sending an email to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
