LSBU Brixton Topcats 72-56 London United
Top scorers: Petkus 28, Gaymond 10, Umekwe 9

LSBU Brixton Topcats continued their good start to the season with an excellent disciplined second half display over previously unbeaten London United at the Surrey Sports Park in Guilford on Sunday. This win keeps them at the top of the division with 4 wins from 4 games.

The first quarter was a low scoring scrappy affair with neither team finding any kind of rhythm. London United raced into a 6-0 lead which was answered by Topcats firstly through Aaron Branch and then Rabah Tahraoui with the first trey of the game. The quarter ended with London United edging in front 13-11. The second quarter was a similar story with London United increasing their lead through good penetration and dish basketball which the Topcats were unable to find an answer to. Topcats were also turning the ball over too frequently and missing easy lay ups. Jon Gaymond had the high 6 points in the quarter with some good work inside. At the half the score was 31-25.

The Topcats were like a different team in the second half, with defence that protected the lane and chased shooters off the three point line. They also started to cause London United turnovers and score off the fast break. Uche Umekwe started to go to work inside and Nathan Ashley was perfect from the foul line as the Topcats turned the 6 point deficit into a 6 point lead going into the final period leading 49-43. The final period saw Vytenis Petkus take over the game as he hit 17 quarter points including 3 three pointers as London United got frustrated with the discipline of the Topcats defensive formation and gave Topcats easy fast break points to extend the lead to 16 points at the close of the game the final score being 72-56 in favour of the Topcats. Interim Head Coach, Andy Powlesland was happy with the performance keeping the Topcats at the top of Division 2:

“The second half really showed the kind of basketball this team can play by starting from the defensive end. It was a great team win and we are happy to stay at the top of the Division. We are really clicking as a team now but know there is still work to do”

The next home games are at Brixton Recreation Centre on Sunday 24th November with the Junior Men, Womens and Men’s Topcats playing at 12pm, 2pm, and 4pm respectively.
