Brixton Topcats 41 (9,21,32) (Wade-Fray 17, Haines 9, Da Silva 6)
Team Northumbria 64 (15,22,46) (O’Dwyer 18, Voynova 15, Fong Lyew 10)
They didn’t have it all their own way at opening weekend, but Team Northumbria opened their account for the new season with a 64-41 success against Brixton Topcats in Loughborough.
The North-East side raced out of the blocks and into a commanding 9-1 lead after the initial exchanges but were reeled back in by Brixton, who played with a real verve during the middle part of the first half.
Led by 2012 Olympian Jenaya Wade-Fray who sunk a flurry of triples and eventually ended up garnering 17 points, they stunned Northumbria as they recovered from stalling on the starting line to move in front at 21-20.
While Team Northumbria scored a basket to take a slender lead into the locker room, there was much to ponder for head coach Chris Bunten and his team, but they responded with a blistering third quarter effort.
They took control and once they moved a massive 14 points in front heading into the final period, were able to ease their way to victory behind double-doubles from Fiona O’Dwyer and Diana Voynova.
The former had 18 points and 14 rebounds, while Bulgarian forward Voynova racked up 15 points and 12 boards.
