In the final game of a packed day at Brixton Rec, Topcats men were defeated by a solid London Greenhouse Pioneers side.
Brixton made early errors with six first quarter turnovers as nerves showed in front of the home crowd. However, scoring start from James Lloyd and Amon Brown kept Brixton close. Topcats trailed 8 – 6 after the first four mintues of the game, but offensive rebounds from Pioneers and Brixton turnovers allowed the visitors to build a five point lead going into the second.
Brixton’s offense dried up early in the second, as they went scoreless for four mintues before five quick points from good defense brought Brixton back into the game. However, Topcats turnovers and offensive rebounds from Pioneers continued to be the story of the first half. Pioneers finished the half with a scoring run of their own putting up 13 points in the final five minutes of the quarter giving the visitors a 38 – 23 lead going into the half.
Topcats came out in the third with good defense that frustrated Pioneers. Jordan Crawford provided a burst of scoring as Brixton reduced the lead to just 10 points going into the final quarter.
Brixton continued to push pioneers in the second half, pulling all the way back to within four points. But Topcats had left it too late and Pioneers held their nerve to knock down several free throws in the final quarter to stretch the lead back out leaving the score 68 – 79.
The loss leaves the Topcats men with an even 2-2 record to start the season. Brixton face a tough away trip to Solent Kestrals but will be looking to get back to winning ways as NBL Division 2 begins to take shape.
