Brixton Topcats 52 (Odia 14, Brown 12, Crawford 7)
Solent Kestrels 85 (Baugh 16, Roberts 11)
Brixton Topcats Senior Men suffered a second defeat in the Patrons Cup away at Solent Kestrals. The Topcats lacked fluency as new signings are taking time to gel. Solent opened the game with a 8 – 0 run forcing a Brixton timeout.
However, the timeout failed to stop the run and Solent used their size and physical play, pounding the ball into the post against Brixton’s smaller defenders. With four minutes gone in the first quarter the score stood at 20 – 1 with Kestrals in command. Brixton fought back later in the quarter, which finished 28 – 12 but the deficit would prove an impossible mountain to climb.
The second quarter saw Brixton make an early run, led by Andrew Uithaler’s tenacious defence, Brixton look as if they might get back into the game. Solent, though, were able to weather the storm and poor defensive rebounding and turnovers from the Topcats meant that Solent continued to build their lead going into the half with the score 50 – 25.
Brixton again looked to make headway in the third, opening the quarter with a strong defensive stop and a score at the other end. Robert Odia this time provided the spark, with solid defence and a willingness to attack the basket at the offensive end. However, Solent continued to out-rebound the Topcats and this led to offensive put backs and fast break opportunities Kestrals who were further extended their lead (70 – 39) going into the fourth.
The fourth quarter saw more active defensive stand from the Topcats – who refused to quit despite the deficit. Robert Odia again provided an offensive spark but it was too late for Brixton who were left ruing the huge opening run from Solent to be defeated 52-85.
The Topcats men clearly have a lot of work to do before the league season starts but with players to come in and a number of young players learning early lessons in the Patrons Cup, Brixton are confident that they’ll be ready for the tip off of NBL Division 2 on 18th October.
