Eastside Eagles 72 - 74 (OT) BRIXTON TOPCATS

October 31, 2015 - 17:00 at Eastside [D2 Men]

Topcats men sealed their second victory of the season with a 74 – 72 OT win over Eastside Eagles. The result improves Brixton’s record to 2 wins out of their 3 opening games in NBL Division 2.

Brixton won the first quarter 18 – 14 and showed solid execution on the offensive end. Good ball and player movement from the Topcats led to open shots. However, defensively Brixton found themselves in early foul trouble at the defensive end. Jordan Crawford  headed to the bench early after picking up two early fouls and the Topcats found themselves in team fouls just 5 minutes into the first quarter. Free throws and second chance points kept the Eagles within touching distance heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter opened with an AJ Uithaler steal converted into an and one score. However, Eastside would come back into the game after switching to a zone. Whilst Brixton’s offence stagnated, Pringle and Lewis provided an offensive spark for the Eagles as they combined for 16 of their teams 24 second quarter points. The teams headed into half time with Eastside leading 38 – 33.

Topcats opened the third with a 12 – 4 run. Brixton’s defence was excellent in the quarter as they limited their opponents to challenged attempts and cleaned the defensive glass. Stops on the defensive end led to fast break opportunities for Brixton. However, missed lay ups and shots around the rim prevented Brixton from building a bigger lead. Heading into the fourth the Topcats led 53 – 49.

The fourth quarter was tightly contested as Eagles worked themselves back into the game. With less than a minute to go Eastside took a one point lead. Brixton responded by executing the play Coach Baker drew up in his timeout to perfection. However, James Lloyd was fouled at the rim and after missing his first free throw, the youngster remained calm to make sure of the second and send the game into overtime.

As the teams traded free throws in the overtime period, Brixton’s tough defence and teamwork on offence ensured that they saw out the game for a 74 – 72 victory sealed at the line by Amon Brown.

Brixton Topcats Top scorers: Amon Brown: 14, James Lloyd: 14, AJ Uithaler and Lawrie Warburg: 9
