The Lady Topcats win in the top of the table clash against London Westside to continue their perfect record in Division 2.
The Lady Topcats started slow unable to find their range giving London Westside an early 10-4 lead, but back to back baskets from Taylor Hilton and Rochelle Davids helped to close the gap. The visitors hit a well worked three point shot to take them into the first quarter with a narrow 13-10 lead. The second quarter saw much of the same with trading baskets and both teams finding it hard to get going offensively. The Topcats needed a spark and found it with Hilton who went on a tear of her own scoring 11 out of the teams next 15 points giving her 17 points personal going into the half with a 31-27 lead to the Topcats.
The third quarter saw the Topcats fire on all cylinders starting with scores from Vanessa Da Silva and a long distance effort from Fatumah Lwazi extending the lead to 38-29. Again it was Hilton who was scoring at will notching up another quick 6 points alongside Davids and Rachel James. Ishara Bilson-Graham got in on the act knocking down back to back shots with the latter from beyond the arc where the lead had now jumped out to 21 points (53-31). The quarter was closed out by Achai Biong controlling the boards at both ends of the floor and getting to the line giving the Topcats a 57-34 lead. The final quarter saw Tia Brown catch fire hitting the Topcats next 11 points with some sharp shooting to open up Westside’s zone defence. Moji Odusanya closed the game out scoring well inside with Charlene St Marthe capping the game off with a deep three pointer to give the Topcats a well deserved 75-52 victory to continue their unbeaten run to the season.
Coach Vear was happy with how the team responded in the second half:
“Playing at 11am on a Sunday isn’t easy and it showed for us in the first half. The second half we turned it up a notch and showed our depth. Taylor carried us in the first half and was great all game. She is fitting in really well for us as she is still learning our system. I was also really happy for Tia Brown. She works so hard in practice and asked me what she needed to do to help the team. I told her she needs to knock down shots and she did exactly that today. Overall, I’m happy with the win as we continue to stay undefeated.”
The Lady Topcats next game is at Brixton Rec on Sunday 9th February vs Oaklands College, tip off time 2pm. Make sure to get down and support the Lady Topcats to continue their unbeaten run in Division 2.
