LSBU Lady Topcats 67-46 Team Solent Suns
Top Scorers: Davids 17, St Marthe & Da Silva 14, Lwazi 12
The Lady Topcats hold strong to bully past Team Solent Suns advancing to the semi finals of the playoffs.
Both teams have met on three occasions this season where the Topcats hold a 3-0 record winning by an average margin of 26 points but the playoffs are a very different story with it being knockout stages. This showed early as the Topcats started slowly making defensive errors which is very unlike the home side seeing them down 0-4 early. A score from Sevian Witter and two free throws by Vanessa Da Silva eased the Lady Topcats to tie the game at 4-4. The visitors still had confidence scoring well where Taylor Hilton then got in on the act scoring 8 personal points to close out the quarter in favour of the Topcats 16-10.
The second quarter saw Rochelle Davids score well inside as well as assisting to Da Silva for easy lay ups to extend the lead to 26-18 for the home team. Solent tried to counter but it was again the duo of Davids and Da Silva who connected to score the next 6 points to give the Lady Topcats their largest lead of 10 points going into the half with a 32-22 lead.
The third quarter saw the Topcats come out flat allowing the visitors back into the game who started on a 6-0 run. The home team couldn’t get stops where Team Solent Suns went on a 15-4 run giving them the lead of 37-36. The Topcats needed energy and pose which they found on the defensive end from Moji Odusanya who was relentless in stopping solent’s US import player. The damage on the offensive end was caused by Charlene St Marthe and once again Davids who both combined for the entire 15 points of the quarter for the Topcats to restore back the lead 47-39.
The final quarter is where the Lady Topcats showed their endurance and willpower with Fatumah Lwazi catching fire hitting three consecutive three pointers to extend the lead to 69-43. Her hot hand opened up the visitors zone where St Marthe was left open from great ball movement to hit from deep. She then stayed perfect from the line to close out the game with a 67-46 win. Coach Vear was happy with how the team stayed together.
“I said after the game that great teams find a way to win when they played badly. We did that today. I’m proud of how we stuck together and really grinded out the win after not playing our usual brand of basketball. I thought Rochelle Davids really stepped up on both ends of the floor. She was the leader. Charlene St Marthe also steadied the ship towards the end, and once again Fatumah Lwazi showed how she can score at ease when she lets the game come to her. I could go on and on about everyone. This really was a great team effort by the whole squad and we are all happy we move onto the semi-finals next week”.
