Top scorers: Bilson-Graham 14, Okwuosa 9, Davids/Lwazi 8
The Lady Topcats started their 2013/14 with a convincing win in the first round of the National Trophy against Solent Suns at Brixton Rec on Sunday 6th October. Straight from the tip the Topcats put their uptempo style to play, pushing the ball and getting to the basket. The starting three guards of Rachel James, Rochelle Davids & Fatumah Lwazi caused the Suns problems getting easy fast break lay ups off their tenacious ball pressure racing out to an early 12-4 lead. This forced the Suns Head Coach, CJ Lee to call for an early timeout. The Topcats continued to stay with a high tempo game plan sharing the ball with Stephanie Laguda and Sevian Witter bringing great spark off the bench as well as both Vanessa Da Silva & Faith Okwuosa controlling the boards at both ends giving a first quarter lead of 20-8.
The second quarter saw the Suns try to slow the Topcats down switching to a zone defence which worked in parts but a nice inside move by Achai Biong followed by a three pointer from James moved the lead up to 27-11 settling the team down. The game saw baskets being traded for a few minutes before Davids turned on her aggression scoring and assisting well taking the Topcats lead to 33-17 heading into the half.
The third quarter is where we got to see how good the Lady Topcats team can be this year with their defence shutting down the Suns to only allowing two points in the entire quarter. The other end points started to pile on with Bilson-Graham finding her range from behind the arc and Tia Brown also getting in on the action hitting a well worked three from the corner. The Lady Topcats extended their lead to a 30-point haul with a 49-19 lead after three quarters.
The fourth quarter saw the intensity slightly drop with the Topcats finding themselves trading baskets again but despite the efforts by the Suns, it wasn’t enough with the home team winning convincingly 60-33. Head Coach Steve Vear was happy with how his team played in their first game together.
“For our first game, I’m happy. We got to finally play a game which we have all been itching to do. It’s always nice as a coach to have that luxury of being able to make a sub and the tempo and energy off the bench doesn’t drop. We have a deep squad so we can play uptempo. I got to play all of the Ladies similar minutes which shows how deep we are. We will aim for another great week of practice and prepare for our next game. It’s always going to be one game at a time.”
