LSBU Brixton Lady Topcats 63 – London Westside 57
Top Scorers: Davids 22, Lwazi 16, James 8
The LSBU Lady Topcats hold off a resilient London Westside team to win 63-57 infront of a enthusiastic crowd at Brixton Rec to progress to the 2nd round of the National Cup.
The game started with a high tempo from the tip off seeing Topcats picking up a quick 4-0 lead off two fast break lay ups. Westside hit back knocking down outside jump shots where the game saw the lead change several times. A buzzer beater 3 pointer from Westside saw the Lady Topcats down 16-17 after the first quarter. The second quarter saw the Topcats come out of the blocks with more energy giving them back the lead 20-18. The quarter proved to continue this way with the starting three guards of Davids, Lwazi and James finding their range combining for 15 of the Lady Topcats 19 points of the quarter giving the home side a lead of 34-29 heading into half time.
The third quarter saw Fatumah Lwazi come out aggressively hitting back to back shots for 5 points extending the lead to 10 points (39-29). The lead then extended further to 43-32 via the free throw line for the Topcats, but lack of concentration on the defensive end allowed Westside to get some easy baskets. Some missed opportunities on offence for the home team had forced the game to become a single digit lead again going into the fourth quarter with the Topcats still in the lead 50-43.
The fourth quarter was simply about defence for the Topcats turning up the gear shutting down their opponents. Westside had stuck in their zone defence for the entire second half where the Topcats just couldn’t find their range from the 3-pt line. Despite the offence not always in sync, the Lady Topcats showed their stamina turning up their energy on defence at an ultimate high causing Westside finding it hard to score. A crucial steal by James in the last minute who then drove the length of the court assisting Lwazi put the Topcats clear with a 60-55 lead. Rochelle Davids (pictured) came up huge in the final stages of the game scoring the last 7 out of the Topcats final 11 pts securing the win 63-57. She was happy with how the team responded to close out a tight game:
“I think our team moral and defence helped us win that game. We rebounded well on the defensive end allowing us to reward ourselves on the offensive end. Even though we had some tough calls against us, we stuck together and stayed true to the type of defence we play which worked in our favour” – Rochelle Davids
The Lady Topcats now progress to the next round of the National Cup where they will play Sussex Thunder on Sunday 27th October at Brixton Rec.
