LSBU Lady Topcats 70-41 Sussex Thunder
Top Scorers: Lwazi 21, Maignomo 15, James 13 [Game Stats]
The Lady Topcats kick started 2014 with a convincing win over Sussex Thunder to continue their undefeated streak staying top of Division 2.
The game started slowly with baskets being traded as expected with the Xmas break meaning neither team had played for over four weeks. It was a very low scoring first quarter with Topcats hitting two three pointers resulting in the game being tied at 10-10.
The second quarter saw the Lady Topcats start to pile up the points with Sevian Witter connecting on her second triple as well as Josephine Maignomo finding gaps in the middle of Thunder’s zone to get to the free throw line. The defense had also picked up by the Topcats who had turned the tempo up in their favour which allowed for some easy fast break points. Fatumah Lwazi started to find her touch adding a quick 7 points to her tally giving the Topcats a huge 32 point quarter resulting in a commanding half time lead of 42-19.
The second half started with baskets again being traded where Rachel James was controlling the court on both ends of the floor making good decisions and grabbing rebounds. The quarter ended with the Topcats still ahead 44-30. The final quarter allowed Coach Steve Vear to sub in and out giving under-18 junior Vanessa Johnson court time in her second appearance for the senior Lady Topcats squad. It was again Lwazi who continued her offensive display scoring 12 out of the final 14 points for the Lady Topcats who ran out convincing winners 70-41 to continue their unbeaten run in Division 2. Coach Vear was happy with the team’s performance:
“The Xmas break is always tough as it’s like starting up again with your fitness and everyone getting back on the same page. We started slow which I expected but our second quarter performance really opened up the whole game for us. I was particular happy with how Fatumah Lwazi played. She has been dealing with some off court issues so coming back in the New year and putting up 21 points like she was doing for us early in the season is really encouraging for her and the team.”
The Lady Topcats face their biggest test yet in Division 2 as they take on Bristol Storm in the semi final of the National Trophy on Sunday 19th January at Streatham Leisure Centre, tip off at 2pm. Please come down and support the team as they try to book a place in the final.
