The Lady Topcats move their unbeaten record to 6-0 advancing to the quarter final of the National Trophy by beating local rivals London Westside on Sunday 10th November at Brixton Rec.

The home team put in their best start to a game this season with a 16-0 run with an array of scoring on the break as well as from behind the arc led by Point Guard and co-captain Rachel James. The lead was extended to 27-7 at the end of the first quarter with Fatumah Lwazi picking up a quick 4 points of her own. Westside picked up their game at the start of the second quarter who were starting to find their range and threaten the lead but Sevian Witter settled the team towards the end of the half scoring 6 of the last 9 points to give a 42-21 half time lead.

The second half was a very different story where the Lady Topcats hit an offensive slump only scoring 18 points in the entire second half. The visitors capitalised winning the third quarter 13-8 where they carried this into the final stanza. Coach Vear was forced to call several timeouts to try and rally his troops. Westside kept coming, outscoring the Lady Topcats again in the fourth (18-10) but it wasn’t enough as the home side ran out deserved winners 60-49 despite shooting a season low 18% from behind the arc and 34FG% for the game.

Rachel James (pictured above) led the charge with 17 points and 6 rebounds who was happy with the teams performance and advancing to the quarter finals.

We know Westside are a tough team who can knock down shots where we prepared and worked hard in training for the last 2 weeks which really showed. Today we had our best start to a game where we played our game, had good energy and everyone was on the same page playing for each other. We also had good execution with our fast breaks and making the right decisions on offence. Most importantly we all had fun and there was a lot of support off the bench.

The Lady Topcats will need to use the depth they have in their squad for next weekend where they play their first double header of the season, away to Oaklands on Saturday 16th November and then away again to Division 1 team Barking Abbey in the quarter final of the National Cup on Sunday 17th November.
