tn_Finding-a-lane-682x1024 copyThe game was crucial for both teams as the Topcats were looking to stay undefeated to close out winning the league and Team Solent chasing for second place with London Westside. The game started with Sevian Witter and Ishara Bilson-Graham both connecting from three to give the Topcats an early 12-5 lead. However, the home side started to find some open looks after good ball movement to edge back into the game. Taylor Hilton and Rochelle Davids came off the bench to provide a much needed spark to give the Topcats a 21-10 lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter started with back to back scores from Hilton and a well worked three pointer by Bilson-Graham off a nice assist from Achai Biong. The lead was now 30-14 in favour of the Topcats who were looking comfortable. Team Solent again fought back hitting from the outside to close the gap winning the quarter where the Topcats lead had fallen to just 9 points with a 34-25 half time lead.

Coach Vear started the third quarter with a smaller line up to keep the tempo up as the Suns looked to continue to slow the Topcats down in their zone. This proved vital leading to a 14-0 run opening the game up giving the Topcats complete control. Rochelle Davids was orchestrating the offence setting up open shots for her team mates where it was Rachel James who scored 10 points personal in a 18-2 run giving the Topcats a 22 point lead (52-30) after three quarters.

The team were firing on all cylinders with great ball movement against the Suns’ zone as well as trapping defences causing fast break lay ups. The fourth quarter saw Biong work well inside as well as Tia Brown connecting deep from three, again assisted by Davids. The game was closed out well giving the Topcats a well deserved 83-47 lead, moving ever closer to winning the league title.

It was a great team performance with many players putting in stellar performances. Taylor Hilton notched up her fourth double double in her six games for the Topcats with 15 points & 17 rebounds. James and Davids controlled the back court for the team with the latter producing 7 pts, 8 assists and 7 rebs and captain James putting in an all round great performance of 15pts, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Bilson-Graham added 15 points personal going 3/5 behind the arc to give a great balance of scoring. It was Sevian Witter (pictured) putting in the performance of the day tallying up a season high 16pts whilst adding 5 rebounds and 4 assists. She was happy with how the team bounced back in a very important game to stay undefeated in the league.

“We have big goals as a team this season so it was vital to bouce back, trust each other and work harder after the cup defeat. We knew the importance of this league game and we were also missing a few players. We believed in our roles and dug deep to produce a good away win.”

The Lady Topcats have a double header next weekend where they play London Westside on Saturday away and St Albans Saints on Sunday 9th March at Brixton Recreation Centre, 2pm tip off. A win on Saturday will guarantee the Topcats their first silverware of the season being crowned Division 2 (South East) league winners.
