The Lady Topcats edge past Oaklands to continue their perfect record in Division 2 sitting at the top of the table.
After having a week off, the Lady Topcats showed signs of this where the game started with forced turnovers and errors from both teams. Fatumah Lwazi opened the scoring with a well worked three pointer followed by a nice assist from Rochelle Davids to find Achai Biong inside for an easy lay-up. The visitors were making life difficult for the so far dominate Topcats by moving the ball well to find open looks. The quarter ended all even at 10-10.
The second quarter was much the same with both teams finding it hard to find any offensive rhythm where it was both Sevian Witter and Ishara Bilson-Graham taking on the load of scoring with the latter closing the half with a great assist from Biong for a deep three pointer giving the Topcats the narrow lead of 24-17.
It was clear Head Coach Steve Vear wasn’t happy with his teams first half performance where the home side came out firing in the third quarter notching up the first 8 points with Lwazi causing most of the damage. It was again Davids orchestrating the team adding assist after assist to keep the Lady Topcats offence flowing as Oaklands switched between man and zone defence. The defense had also picked up led by Sevian Witter grabbing steal after steal for the Topcats where the lead had now reached double digits closing out the quarter up 37-26.
The final quarter saw both teams starting well where it was Taylor Hilton who went on an offensive tear tallying up a quick 10 points again assisted well by Davids. Tia Brown closed the game out with 5 personal points of her own to give the Lady Topcats another win to keep their undefeated streak in Division 2 going, winning 56-44. Coach Vear was happy with the win and also credited Oaklands for the way they came to play.
“We didn’t play well and we know that. I feel great teams find a way to win when they don’t play well which we did so overall I’m happy we grinded it out. I give a lot of credit to Oaklands and their coach Michael Ball. They came to play today. They made some adjustments from when we played them earlier in the year and I’m very impressed with his young team who have a bright future in this league”.
