Four of last year’s core Division 2 League and Playoff Championship team are back to play in the newly formed WBBL.

Athletic 5ft 5′ combo guard Fatumah Lwazi will be back for the Topcats supplying real power on both ends of the floor. Lwazi was named the club’s MVP last season contributing 11.59 PPG on a solid 46%FG and scored the second most three pointers on 31% shooting behind the arc. She also tallied an impressive season high 35 points and added 10 steals in this game showing the kind of impact she can have on both ends of the floor.

6ft 0′ forward Vanessa Da Silva (pictured) will be returning after her best season in England Basketball for some years. She was named the clubs Most Improved Player as the second leading rebounder averaging 8.75RPG and also had four double doubles last season with a massive 14 point and 20 rebound game. Da Silva also led with a team high 1.18 blocks per game.

Sharp shooting Ishara Bilson-Graham is another returning player coming off a fine season lighting up the league on a very impressive 41.86% from beyond the arc and 80% from the FT line. Her ability to make shots will help to open up the team’s offence and will play a key role in the WBBL outfit this coming season.

The last returnee is Playoff Finals MVP Charlene St Marthe, a 5ft 3′ point guard who finished last season strongly as Coach Vear’s best player. St Marthe is an unbelievable talent and has all the tools to lead the team. She will look to continue her fine form from last season to make an instant impact in the WBBL.

Coach Vear is really happy that the new WBBL team can be built around the core players from last season.

“All four of these players were a huge part of what we achieved last season winning both the League and Playoff Finals and I’m really happy that they will be coming back to be apart of the newly formed WBBL. It was vital that I signed these players back to continue to build on the team ethos we formed last season. We also have some new additions joining the team which will be announced in due course.”

The WBBL Brixton Topcats tip off their first home game on Sunday 12th October against Ipswich in the National Cup at Brixton Recreation Centre @ 4pm. More details about ticket giveaways will be announced shortly.
