Coaches Corner | Vol. 2

October 4, 2013

As the new look Brixton Lady Topcats get ready for their 2013/14 campaign to start this coming weekend, we got a chance to ask new Head Coach Steve Vear his thoughts leading into the season.

Entering your first ever season as a Head Coach, what will you bring in your rookie season?

I really don’t look at it being my ‘rookie’ season as I’ve been around the game my whole life. I have been fortunate to play for some great coaches who have taught me so much about the game. I feel that this is a natural transition for me to start coaching and pass on my knowledge. What I will bring is a lot of passion, a teaching mentality and high expectations. These are all attributes that helped me to become a successful player so these will be the basis of my coaching philosphy.

How has pre season gone so far?

Pre season has been great. I really can’t complain about much in terms of getting the players I wanted, ample practice time, and also having them buy into the team concept we will have this year. The only downside of pre season was that it became evident it was impossible to find a team to organise a friendly game with.

What should we be expecting to see out on the court from your team this season?

The team will play uptempo. We have a lot of great athletes and quick guards so getting out on the break is something we will aim to do. Tenacious on defense and unselfish on offence. Something the ladies have really bought into which has been great to see.

How have you found adapting from playing to coaching so far?

This is something I assume most players turning to coaching find difficult. It’s strange being on the sidelines giving so much direction and seeing a whole new perspective of the game. I have found out very quickly that you have to care about every player and manage all of them individually. It has been challenging at times but something I know through experience I will get better at.

Finally, what are your main goals for the upcoming season?

I’m a person who is big on goals, setting targets to focus on in order to stay on course. I have set the team three goals for the season where the main overall goal for us will be to get promoted to Division 1.

Make sure to come and support the new look Lady Topcats in their quest for promotion with the first game of the season vs Solent Stars this coming Sunday 6th October | 2pm tip off at Brixton Rec.

The game will also be available on Live Stats here
