5ft 8″ British Guard Amber Charles will return to the Topcats roster ahead of the second WBBL 2015/16 season.
Charles joined late in the season only playing 5 games but proved to be an instant impact player – notably, a very impressive game against Leeds Beckett University with a game high 18 points as well as adding 2 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals in just over 24 minutes. This was awarded with Charles featuring in the WBBL Team of the Week, where Coach Vear is really pleased she will be back for the upcoming season.
“I’m looking forward to having Amber with us for a full season as with just the short time with us last season she brought so much to the team. Her defence stands out as she is so gritty and really gets after it taking on challenges of guarding the opponents best players. She is also a very underrated offensive player who can get scoring in bunches at a very high percentage.”
“She will also help to be a great leader for our younger players, which is vital for our club.”
Charles and Vear have also just arrived back from Portugal where they featured in the first ever female Midnight Madness travel team, where Coach Vear gives some further insight into how the tournament went against top international clubs.
“The CAB invitational tournament was an amazing experience. The team showed to compete against some elite international teams who all had top USA and European players. Amber [Charles] really displayed she can play at that level and more than held her own. It was a great experience for both of us which we want to take back to the Topcats and carry into the season”.
Last season in only 5 games, Charles averaged 6.2 PPG, & 1.2 SPG showing a very impressive shooting touch on 42FG% and 45% from beyond the arc. She also had a team high 88% from the free throw line, where Charles echoed the experience in with the Midnight Madness travel team.
“The trip to Portugal was such an amazing experience and eye-openening tournament where it’s really got me fired up for this season. I was challenged to perform by the opposition every game which has inspired me to kick it up a notch and be more confident in my game.”
Charles turns her attention to the upcoming season with just under 4 weeks to go.
“I’m really excited about the upcoming season with Brixton. We’ve been working hard in our pre season and Coach Vear has really been challenging us to push each other, work together and nine in our skills and contributions to the team. We have a great group of players and I’m looking forward to seeing how our team continues to grow and develop as the season unfolds.”
The Topcats will face off against heavily favoured Team Northumbria in the opening WBBL weekend on Saturday October 17th @ Loughborough University. More news on future signings will follow shortly.
